Rabbi Haim Beliak comment to the Konstanty Gebert's article |
|
Konstanty Gebert's heartfelt story of Jewish revival is a wonderful personal story about Gebert himself. Gebert has earned the right to be seen as both courageous and wrong. (Gebert's article appeared in JTA http://jta.org/news/article/2010/01/06/1010037/op-ed-once-unthinkable-a-jewish-community-thrives-in-poland) Gebert's work as a journalist, recording the early years of the collapse of the latest occupiers of Poland - the Russian dominated Communist regime - is a matter of record. His reputation stands on a clear record of Jewish spiritual growth and work. Mr. Gebert acknowledges his errors and frankly, most of today's Jewish world shares those errors: there is indeed a revival of Jewish life in Poland which started in earnest some 12 years ago with the creation of Beit Warszawa – a progressive Jewish community that is actively awakening and serving the hidden, dormant and often ignored Jews living in Poland.
