The book “Pusta woda” by Krystyna Żywulska was expelled from the collective imagination of Polish readers about 40 years ago. As unpretentious and strong as the famous Miron Białoszewski’s “The Warsaw Uprising Memorybook”, it tells the story of what happened a year earlier, a few streets away, in the Warsaw Ghetto. ”Pusta woda” seems to be a simple and undemanding, yet a touching story of Jews and Poles under the Nazi occupation during WWII. After 1968 Krystyna Żywulska was forced to leave Poland with a one-way passport …
